Kull the Conqueror

As you already know, I am a bit of a comics fan; 2000AD, Judge Dredd, some Robert E Howard characters (Conan, Red Sonja, Kull and Solomon Kane), the Alien/Predator universe and a few other minor one-offs that looked good at the time. Although, in my youth, I read some superhero comics, they never really did anything for me, except perhaps Batman; I want to believe that my hero(ine) can, in theory, die and not come back. I know that the majority of comics characters will not die (due to the money they produce for their creators and distributors) but I at least want that possibility to be there to make things more "believable".

A few years ago I started to re-read all of my 2000ADs and Judge Dredd Megazines - some major characters of the less developed kind do die here, so the stories often keep you on your toes, especially if they are tales of a fixed length and not one of the ongoing, well-established series. I have managed to complete my reading up until the end of 2014 so far and then bagged, boarded and boxed those I have read. Perhaps I should have chronicled my progress, but too late now I guess? I may go back and do this at some later stage, perhaps after I have chronicled those going forwards from 2015.

Likewise, at the end of last year and beginning of this year I read all of my Dynamite Comics Red Sonja collection. I had bought them over the last decade or so, but just plonked them in a box for later reading (likewise all my other REH comics mentioned above). Unfortunately, this "later" meant a lot later, but I have completely read all of the Red Sonja comics now (except the latest Monthly Run - series 5); alas, I forgot to chronicle them too.

This now brings me onto Kull the Conqueror. I haven't read any of the Dark Horse stories so far (again in a box awaiting the day like the Red Sonja Dynamite collection), and only read the Marvel ones featured in Savage Sword of Conan back in the day, so the collections created by Dark Horse, when they had ownership of the franchise, are just what I need to get back up to date now that IDW are the proud owners of the IP.

Dark Horse only produced three mini-series; reprinted the Savage Sword of Conan appearances (plus a few other comics appearances) in the Savage Sword of Kull omnibus editions; and reprinted the original Marvel monthly run series in the Chronicles of Kull collected works.

Next up in the reading order (for me anyway), although they would have been printed concurrently with the original colour stories, are the Savage Sword of Kull collections; so named because the vast majority of the stories originally appeared in the black and white Savage Sword of Conan back in the day...

Finally, Dark Horse printed three of their own mini-series of Kull's adventures. I collected these in their comic form but all were collated into TPBs for casual readers to pick up...

I will be reading all of these comics and TPBs in the order shown above, and will comment on them in later blog posts. As most of Kull's tales seem to be short stories rather than long running series they will be great sources to mine for ideas for scenarios for RPGs and tabletop battles.

This just leaves me to mention the IDW Kull series. I am not sure what happened with my own collection here but my comic supplier suddenly stopped at issue 3 of the mini-series. I will need to track down the other comics in the collection or perhaps just go straight for the TPB collected edition (when I am able to financially).

This story, apparently, is set in the modern day. I am not sure what I think about pre-historic and ancient characters being brought into the modern period as there would be far too many discrepancies in behaviour and language to say the least - to quote 2000AD, they would be liable to Future Shock (or become futsie). The Red Sonja series got around this partly by having a cop and historian that knew some Hyborian so they could communicate - stretching things a bit but I could live with that.

Comics Week and FCBD 2019

This will probably be a bit of a rambling post, so apologies in advance. This week is a shorter working week due to the bank holiday for Easter, so there will be fewer entries. Friday just gone was a bank holiday too, so last week was also a shorter week, but it passed me by due to not being in work and hence why I made a blog entry every day. I am hoping to blog every week day whilst I am not working to give me something to do as a break from looking for work and therefore keeping my sanity a bit longer. It sure beats watching day time TV (which I don't do anyway) or just staring at the same four walls (or procrastinating for hours on end). That said, I do keep myself busy by doing the household chores, going to the gym, running and prepping minatures for painting in between the hours I spend trawling the net for a new role.

So, now that all of my Lord of the Rings figures are prepped in readiness for undercoating and a bit of putty work (I still need to source some decent, easily workable stuff) I have time to re-order my comics collection some more whilst awaiting some good spraying weather - that said, I did manage to get a few miniatures undercoated on bank holiday Monday as a tester for how long they will take to do (it turns out I can do around 9 minis per 15 minutes, or 36 an hour provided all goes well).

As mentioned in previous posts I avidly collect 2000AD and Judge Dredd comics, but I also like the various Robert E. Howard characters that have made it into pictorial print (Conan, Red Sonja, Kull and Solomon Kane to name just the main ones). There are other IPs I dip into occasionally too, but these are the main ones.

As Star Wars day this year (May the Fourth) is also Free Comic Book Day, I wanted to sort out what I am going to be reading over the coming months and what I want to pick up at the three comic shops I usually visit on this year's FCBD. Also, this year, at GOSH Comics in London, they are running a children's art workshop which I am hoping to take my youngest son to.

On FCBD I usually visit three London shops (Forbidden Planet, GOSH and Orbital comics) to collect as many comics as I can, grab a few beers and a burger, and then head off to a pub to see out the rest of the evening. This year will be a little different if my youngest is with me as the beers will be replaced by soft drinks and the evening will end a lot earlier. I am sure he will want to grab a few bags full of goodies as well as working with comics artists to find out where his talents lie.

Anyway, onto what I am hoping to achieve this week. I am aiming to sort out and catalogue all of the REH character comics I have collected over the last decade but not read yet. I have been receiving a couple of small parcels of comics every month/week (American comics and Judge Dredd Megazine every month, and 2000AD every week) but they have all just been stored in a variety of boxes until I could get around to reading them. As mentioned a few times elsewhere (and therefore apologies if I am repeating myself too often), I have (re-)read 2000AD and Judge Dredd up to the end of 2014 (only 4 and a bit years to go now!), read Red Sonja and now need to sort out Kull, Solomon Kane and Conan.

I have started reading The Chronicles of Kull, so these will be the first set of comics to be featured and catalogued, followed by Solomon Kane, then Conan, and after that, I am not sure yet. I will decide as the days go by and the boxes are sorted.
